The Golden Sage

The Golden Sage collection is an original work by Ekin, inspired by an eighteenth-century Thangka of Śākyamuni Buddha preserved in the Palace Museum collection. Created during the Qing dynasty, the original painting reflects a period in which Tibetan Buddhist art flourished under imperial patronage, bringing together refined painting techniques, luminous mineral pigments, and richly ornamented compositions that remain among the finest examples of Himalayan Buddhist art.

At the center of the composition is Śākyamuni Buddha, the historical Buddha and founding teacher of Buddhism. For centuries, his image has occupied a central place within the Thangka tradition, serving not only as an object of devotion but also as a visual embodiment of wisdom, compassion, and inner awakening. While inspired by a historical masterpiece, Ekin's interpretation seeks to preserve the quiet presence and contemplative balance that have long distinguished Buddhist painting.

Realized through Ekin's proprietary Kinka technique, the work translates the intricacy of traditional Thangka painting into layers of precious metal. The vivid mineral palette characteristic of Himalayan painting—deep cinnabar reds, luminous azurite blues, and rich malachite greens—is preserved alongside sculpted gold relief that brings new dimensionality to the composition. The Buddha's halo, jeweled ornaments, lotus throne, and architectural details are rendered with varying heights and surface finishes, allowing polished and matte gold to catch the light with subtle variation while maintaining the clarity and harmony of the original painting. Rather than replacing color, gold becomes another visual language within the composition, enriching its texture while remaining faithful to the spirit of the historical work.

Inspired by one of the Palace Museum's finest examples of Tibetan Buddhist painting, the collection explores how the visual language of Himalayan sacred art can find new expression through Kinka, creating a contemporary work that honors both the artistic legacy and contemplative beauty of the Thangka tradition.
